The Golden Girls is my favourite TV show of all time, full of life’s struggles, dealt with through wonderful humour, inspiring wisdom and heart-warming love by four incredible women, who share a house in Miami. (If you’ve never seen it, do. It’s amazing!)

Between 1985 and 1992, the seven seasons covered a range of topics, all of which are still relevant today.

It was created by US TV producer Susan Harris. Susan suffered during the 1980s and, I believe, is still suffering now with what is termed predominantly in the US as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. It is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/neuroimmune disease.

The historical waters pertaining to said disease are murky in the extreme, and there is a wealth of information on the internet about its thought origin and the subsequent damage caused by medical professionals (loose term!) throughout the last several decades. Such neglect and life-threatening abuse is still ongoing today, twenty-nine years after this storyline aired, primarily at the hands of ignorant and arrogant psychiatrists.

As someone with considerable medical knowledge, I can tell you that AWARENESS of this brutal, unforgiving, unrelenting and cruelly debilitating disease is paramount, in order to move forwards with EFFECTIVE treatment.

I have selected the relevant sections from this special two-part episode Sick and Tired, from Season Five, which aired in 1989, to highlight how much HASN’T changed, as well as draw attention to the poignant words spoken by Dorothy throughout, and most especially at the end.

Having been on the receiving end of disbelief, extremely nasty comments and woefully erroneous assumptions, I thought, when rewatching the episodes recently, someone should do a video like this. I decided that someone should be me, since those four characters mean so much to me, and have literally helped me survive through suffering I wouldn't ever wish on another soul.

Please share FAR and WIDE. Thank you.

are you I'm the doctor
3:54
we'll see about that I'm Dorothy's
4:00
mother and I want to know what's wrong
4:01
with her and don't tell me nothing
4:02
because I know there's something wrong
4:03
with her mother's no look ma I'll talk
4:06
to you about it later
4:07
your daughter is fine mrs. Petrillo 100%

4:19
it could be functional functional mental

mental well let me tell you something
4:27
mister 100% tip-top mental my daughter
4:31
may be no spring chicken and her jaw
4:33
might crack when she chews and she may
4:38
have noticeable trouble digesting raw
4:41
vegetables but one thing she's not is
4:45
mental thanks mom
4:49
Rose gets to go lunch whenever I don't
4:53
feel well Rose makes me feel okay what
4:57
is she your best friend Rose knows I'm
5:01
sick well I know you're sick God knows
5:04
you tell me all the time waste
5:09
Rose Nylund in New York it's gonna be a
5:13
great trip so what are you doing here
5:17
you've seen everybody nobody found
5:19
anything wrong with you and between
5:21
their work ups and mind and no more
5:23
tests to run yeah but I know it's boring
5:25
your main complaint is you're tired I
5:27
get tired too it's called getting old
5:30
dr. Budd that's not what this is I am
5:33
sick I've had to give up my job because
5:36
I was too tired to do it how'd you get
5:39
here
5:39
I flew no to my office and taxi and from
5:43
the taxi but how did I get from the taxi
5:46
to your office not a hard question
5:49
I walked right you walked you're not
5:52
sick Dorothy the people I see can't walk
5:56
they can't swallow some of them can't
5:58
breathe look don't take this the wrong
6:01
way but have you ever thought about
6:02
seeing a psychiatrist I have seen too
6:04
here are their letters they both say
6:07
there was nothing psychologically wrong
6:09
with me they believe it is physical
6:12
if the hell that ain't no psychiatry is
6:13
not a science then why did you suggest I
6:17
see one because what you have is not
6:19
scientific what else was I going to do
6:22
is send you to New Mexico to a shaman
6:24
there's nothing wrong with you Dorothy
6:26
except what happens to all of us in case
6:28
you haven't noticed you're not 30 take a
6:32
cruise doing go to a hypnotist change
6:35
your hair color my wife became a blonde
6:37
she's a new woman girl Oh Oh Rose that's
6:47
not it what is it Dorothy what happened
6:51
ah maybe I am crazy nobody believes me
6:58
everybody thinks I'm crazy maybe I am
7:01
maybe I'm really crazy Oh Dorothy you
7:04
are not crazy I mean you are absolutely
7:07
not crazy I've seen the way you walk
7:10
I've seen a wiped out you get you're not
7:14
crazy honey you're sick I think so too I
7:18
really do but nobody believes me doctors
7:23
don't know everything Dorothy you're
7:26
right I mean they think they do but they
7:28
don't you're right how is she white
7:33
they'll be depressed even though she
7:34
tries to hide it Sophia she's gonna be
7:37
okay I know it she will be Sophia now
7:40
she's tough you know there are all sorts
7:43
of things that people get that they
7:44
can't diagnose and then they disappear
7:47
just as mysteriously as they can
7:50
I think the worst thing in the world is
7:52
if your child dies before you do Sophia
7:55
Dorothy is not going to die I know that
7:57
she'll be fine I know why do you do that
8:01
Rose why do you make up stories it
8:05
wouldn't feel right to live anymore you
8:07
know if the kid dies it wouldn't feel
8:09
fettling Sophia Dorothy's not dying how
8:13
do you know Rose I know oh now honey
8:16
she's right
8:17
I know too and I'm a writer I see things
8:22
more clearly than the average person my
8:25
perceptions are Keena Sophia we have all
8:32
seen our husbands die we know what that
8:35
is except for how she was getting a
8:37
manicure pedicure Wow I made you
8:43
something and I've seen more death and
8:45
dying than any of you over the past five
8:47
months we've seen a perfectly healthy
8:49
energetic woman waste away she can't do
8:52
anything anymore
8:53
so what difference does it make that
8:55
they don't have a name for it yet it's
8:57
still something there were lots of
8:59
diseases they didn't have a name for you
9:01
think they had a name for the Black
9:03
Plague when one guy had it thousands had
9:05
to die before they knew what it was
9:08
Dorothy could be dying and they just
9:10
don't know it
9:12
[Music]
9:19
well as far as doctors go you've
9:22
certainly seen the best the best don't
9:24
exist anymore the best are dead well I
9:26
don't know about you're the exception I
9:30
didn't mean you
9:32
so do you think I'm crazy too Dorothy I
9:35
think you're very sane just because the
9:37
doctor hasn't found something does it
9:39
mean there isn't something there are you
9:41
serious well how come you know that and
9:44
they don't
9:45
first of all dear I know you you're a
9:47
stable person and if you say you're sick
9:49
you probably are sick no I want you to
9:51
see Michael Chang he's a virologist on
9:54
staff here at the hospital
9:55
you know there are all kinds of diseases
9:57
we didn't know about before look at Lyme
9:59
disease Ari am I gonna die I'm afraid so
10:04
you really think so sooner or later I
10:07
guarantee it unless of course the
10:10
Japanese come up with something come on
10:14
yes his name in number nine God what
10:16
handle Oh Dorothy you were terrific what
10:20
are you going o to see that specialist
10:21
that Harry recommended wipe off your
10:23
makeup what you look too healthy maybe
10:27
that's why they don't believe you you
10:28
don't look sick
10:29
[Laughter]
10:34
she should go they believe her you've
10:38
seen some wonderful doctors but I really
10:40
can't agree with their findings there
10:42
are new diseases arising all the time
10:44
things that we don't necessarily have
10:45
tests for but that doesn't mean the
10:48
disease's don't exist theatric dr. Chang
10:51
please well I think that you are sick I
10:55
think you have something called chronic
10:57
fatigue syndrome it's fairly recent
10:59
there are many theories about it but
11:00
most of us believe it's a virus it just
11:02
has not been identified yet doctors just
11:05
kept telling me I was depressed
11:06
depression can make a person feel tired
11:09
but depression doesn't start suddenly
11:11
give you swollen glands sore throat and
11:12
all the other symptoms now there are
11:14
certain blood tests which we'll do and
11:16
if those results are abnormal that
11:19
combined with the exclusion of the other
11:20
diseases will compose a profile that
11:22
actually thousands of people fit so I
11:25
really have something real I would say
11:27
you most certainly do but we should have
11:29
our answers in a couple of weeks how
11:31
long will it last I mean will it go away
11:32
does it get worse dude does anyone die
11:35
from it well no one has died from it we
11:38
don't know how long it lasts some people
11:40
seem to recover in months some still
11:41
happen after 10 years but that happens
11:44
in other diseases as well you take
11:46
multiple sclerosis some people have
11:48
20-year emissions others wind up in
11:50
wheelchairs they are variations I can
11:53
say at this point is try to adapt to it
11:56
rest when you need to eat well eliminate
11:59
stress if you can right now there is no
12:01
cure and no one thing that relieves
12:03
symptoms in everyone right now I'm
12:05
afraid you'll just have to live with it
12:07
why didn't they tell me all those
12:09
doctors I saw I'm sure some of them
12:12
weren't familiar with it and the ones
12:14
who have heard about it sometimes have
12:15
trouble believing it exists since
12:17
they're not able to see it under their
12:18
microscopes just yet
12:20
those colleagues of mine unfortunately
12:22
tend to blame the victim I can't tell
12:25
you what a relief this is I'm sure are
12:28
there any other questions that I could
12:30
answer for you not now not that I can
12:32
think of maybe later right now I I can't
12:34
even think straight well if there are no
12:37
more questions I'll order some bloodwork
12:39
this is my treat it is a celebration
12:42
what are we celebrating my daughter
12:45
found out she has a debilitating disease
12:52
and it has a name I am thrilled we all
12:56
are well of course congratulations
13:00
champagne it is I can't tell you what a
13:03
relief it is to just be sick not sick
13:06
and crazy and to know what I have and
13:10
that there are a lot of other people who
13:11
have the same thing I don't like the
13:13
name I think I'll have a better name
13:16
that's what dr. Chang said chronic
13:19
fatigue syndrome makes it sound like I'm
13:21
just a tired person when it is so much
13:24
more than that
13:25
it's dr. Farr at the neurologist I saw
13:28
in New York the one who told me I was
13:30
just getting old and to go see a
13:31
psychiatrist they don't make a scene
13:35
order without
13:43
dr. bird yes you probably don't remember
13:47
me but you told me I wasn't sick do you
13:51
remember you told me I was just getting
13:53
old I'm sorry I really don't remember
13:56
maybe you're getting over that's a
14:03
little joke well I tell you doctor but I
14:06
really am sick I have chronic fatigue
14:09
syndrome that is a real illness you can
14:13
check with the Center for Disease
14:14
Control oh well I'm sorry about that
14:17
well I'm glad at least I know I have
14:20
something I'm sure well I see not so
14:24
fast there are some things I have to say
14:29
there are a lot of things that I have to
14:31
say words can't express what I have to
14:35
say what I went through what you put me
14:39
through I can't do this in a restaurant
14:40
good but I will
14:45
Louis who is this person look miss sit I
14:49
sat for you long enough
14:53
dr. Budd I came to you sick sick and
14:57
scared and you dismissed me you didn't
15:00
have the answer and instead of saying
15:01
I'm sorry I don't know what's wrong with
15:04
you
15:04
you made me feel crazy like like I had
15:07
made it all up you dismissed me it made
15:10
me feel like a child a fool on your
15:14
rhotic who was wasting your precious
15:16
time is that is that your caring
15:20
profession is that healing no one
15:24
deserves that kind of treatment dr. Budd
15:26
no one I suspect that I've been a man I
15:29
might have been taking a little bit more
15:31
seriously and not told to go to a
15:33
hairdresser look I am NOT going to sit
15:35
here anymore Louis
15:42
I don't know where you doctors lose your
15:46
humanity but you lose it you know if all
15:49
of you at the beginning of your careers
15:51
could get very sick and very scared for
15:53
a while you probably learn more from
15:55
that than anything else you'd better
15:58
start listening to your patients they
16:01
need to be heard they need caring they
16:04
need compassion they need attending to
16:08
you know someday doctor but you're gonna
16:10
be on the other side of the table and as
16:12
angry as I am and as angry as I always
16:15
will be
16:16
I still wish you a better doctor than
16:19
you were to me
16:21
[Applause]
16:35
you
