The appeal of 124 health professionals against "alternative medicine"

The appeal of 124 health professionals against "alternative medicine"
Doctors and health professionals have decided to warn about fanciful promises and unproven efficacy of so-called alternative medicines like homeopathy. This group demands the exclusion of these esoteric disciplines from the medical field.
The Hippocratic Oath is one of the oldest known ethical commitments. It requires the doctor to provide the best possible care and in the most honest way. These two requirements require him to continually seek to improve his knowledge and inform those who seek his care about what he can reasonably propose, as well as what is unnecessary or against-indicated. It is easy and rewarding to display your knowledge. It is much more difficult to explain and accept its limits. The temptation can then be great to practice care without any scientific basis. This temptation has always existed. She has been, and still is, nourished by charlatans of all kinds who seek the moral guarantee of the title of doctor to promote false therapies with illusory efficiency.
"The medical order tolerates practices that are at odds with its own Code of Ethics and the public authorities organize or even participate in the financing of some of these practices"
The obligation of honesty is enshrined in the Codes of ethics of the medical professions and the Code of public health (article 39 of the Code of ethics and article R.4127-39 of the Code of public health). They forbid charlatanism and deception, impose to prescribe and distribute only proven treatments. They also proscribe the use of secret remedies or not clearly mentioning the substances they contain. The Council of the Order of Physicians is responsible for ensuring that its members do not use their title to promote practices whose science has never proven useful or even dangerous. He must ensure that doctors do not become trade representatives of unscrupulous industries. It must sanction those who have lost sight of the ethics of their exercise.

However, in 2018, the medical order tolerates practices that are at odds with its own Code of Ethics, and the public authorities organize or even participate in the financing of some of these practices. Faced with ever more numerous and esoteric practices, and the growing mistrust of the public towards scientific medicine, we had to react with force and vigor.
"Homeopathy, like other" alternative medicines ", is in no way scientific. These practices are based on beliefs that promise a miraculous and safe recovery. "
Homeopathy , like other practices called "alternative medicine", is in no way scientific. These practices are based on beliefs that promise a miraculous and safe recovery. In September 2017, the Scientific Council of the Academies of European Sciences published a report confirming the lack of evidence of the effectiveness of homeopathy. In most developed countries, doctors are prohibited from prescribing homeopathic products.
The so-called "alternative" therapies are ineffective beyond the placebo effect and are no less dangerous. Dangerous, because they cure the useless by over-medicalizing the population and giving the illusion that any situation can be solved with a "treatment". Dangerous because they fuel and rely on a basic distrust of conventional medicine as shown by the unjustified polemics about vaccines. Finally, dangerous because their use delays diagnosis and necessary treatment, sometimes with dramatic consequences, especially in the treatment of serious diseases such as cancer.

These practices are also costly for public finances. Training is provided in structures receiving public money. Consultations are open in hospitals at the expense of other services. Some of these treatments are covered by Medicare, which is largely in deficit. Thus, homeopathic products can be reimbursed at 30% (and up to 90% in Alsace-Moselle) with a derogatory status exempting them from proving their effectiveness. This finances a prosperous industry whose representatives do not hesitate to insult seriously those who criticize them ("There is a Ku Klux Klan against homeopathy", accused the president of the world leader in the sector, Christian Boiron, in the newspaper Le Progress of July 15, 2016) or to sweep away the demands of scientific evidence.
Of these practices which are neither scientific nor ethical, but very irrational and dangerous, we wish to dissociate ourselves completely.
We urge the Council of the Order of Physicians and public authorities to make every effort to:
- no longer authorize the designation of doctors or health professionals who continue to promote them;
- no longer recognize in any way homeopathy, mesotherapy or acupuncture degrees such as medical diplomas or qualifications;
- no longer produce degrees in medical schools or health training institutions based on practices whose effectiveness has not been scientifically demonstrated;
- no longer pay social security contributions for care, medicine or treatment from disciplines that refuse to accept rigorous scientific evaluation;
- encourage information procedures on the nature of alternative therapies, their deleterious effects and their real effectiveness;
- require all caregivers to respect the ethics of their profession, by refusing to give unnecessary or ineffective treatment, by offering care in accordance with the recommendations of learned societies and the most recent data from science, by demonstrating pedagogy and honesty towards their patients and by offering a sympathetic listening.
