Stefan Behlert has stated the next release of SUSE Linux Enterprise will look a lot different than the current offering, which shares its code base with Leap. "The connection between Leap and SLE has changed. And while some bits and pieces got better, we firmly believe we can do better. SLE 15 is a great general purpose operating system, yet challenges with some use cases, new places of deployment, and the type of enhancement requests show that it's time for a successor."

While SUSE has been quiet about what exactly will happen next, it looks like SLE will become a minimal, transactional base, downstream of openSUSE Tumbleweed. Meanwhile Leap is likely to be phased out, though confirmation has not yet been published about these plans.

Opensuse was about the only really useful Linux distribution. But since their release "42", everything was messed up. And now it still gets worse: Just like the "flowing" web-pages with their stream of digital sewage, the release of a functioning version of a Linux distribution is trashed, and one only gets some "shit of the moment" - with the ridiculous high burden of continuous updates with extreme traffic load, like with the insane "Flatpak" crap.

Each new update might destroy the system. That is madness. Utter madness.

In 1984, the National Biomedical Research Foundation launched a free online database containing over 283,000 protein sequences. Today the Protein Information Resource allows scientists all over the world to take an unknown protein, compare it to the thousands of known proteins in the database, and determine the ways in which it is alike and different. From that data they can quickly and accurately deduce a protein’s evolutionary history and its relationship to various forms of life.

The humble origins of this massive online database start long before the internet. It all began with the Atlas of Protein Sequence and Structure, a 1965 printed book containing the 65 then-known protein sequences, compiled by a woman named Margaret Dayhoff. To create her Atlas, Dayhoff applied cutting-edge computer technologies to find solutions to biological questions, helping usher in the birth of a new field we now call bioinformatics. Originally a chemist, Dayhoff harnessed new and evolving technologies of the post-World War II computing era to pioneer tools that chemists, biologists and astronomers alike could use in in the cross-disciplinary study of the origins of life on Earth.

Kathleen Hylda Valerie Booth, The Grand Old Lady of Computers, born on 9th., July, 1922, died on 29th., September, 2022, at the age of 100 years.

She invented Assembler.

During the 1940s the first general purpose computers, such as the ENIAC (Electronic Numerical Integrator And Computer), were not designed to store programs internally. To program them, it was necessary to manually alter thousands of cables and switches, which could takes days and was extremely error prone.

She was one of the first to work on this new concept of “software”, and seeing the need, invented assembly language to make programming the computer more human friendly. Prior to this, it was a laborious process of either entering machine code into the computer, (the 1s and 0s the computer architecture can understand and execute) via physical switches and cables, or punching holes into cards, and then feeding the cards into the computer. This also required memorizing sequences of 1s and 0s, for instructions of the computer program.

VMware wurde wieder verkauft. Der neue Besitzer ist Broadcom.

Nach das großspurige Broadcom-CEO-Obergroßmaul Hock Tan für die VMware-Programme ein jährlich zu zahlendes Abonnement-System verkündet hat, das sei inzwischen Industrie-Standard, bekam er anscheinend weltweit so saftige Ohrfeigen, daß er einknicken mußte.

This means that everyday users who want a virtual lab on their Mac, Windows or Linux computer can do so for free simply by registering and downloading the latest build from the new download portal located at support.broadcom.com. With the new commercial model, we have reduced our product group offerings down to a single SKU (VCF-DH-PRO) for users who require commercial use licensing. This simplification eliminates 40+ other SKUs and makes quoting and purchasing VMware Desktop Hypervisor apps, Fusion Pro and Workstation Pro, easier than ever. The new Desktop Hypervisor app subscription can be purchased from any Broadcom Advantage partner.

So often when we are out in the community, we hear about the immeasurable value that Workstation, and later Fusion, have brought over the past 25 years. Workstation’s heritage reaches back to the very first product that the company ever shipped, simply called “VMware 1.0” at the time, which coincidentally was released on May 15th, 1999.

Die Übernahme von Vmware durch Broadcom bringt eine neue Unternehmenskultur für den Virtualisierungsanbieter aus Palo Alto mit sich. So soll Broadcom-CEO Hock Tan die VMware-Mitarbeitenden durchaus nachdrücklich und harsch aus dem Homeoffice in die Büros zurückbeordert haben. Laut einem Bericht von "Fortune" (Paywall, via "Yahoo") machte er eine klare Ansage: "Wenn ihr im Umkreis von 50 Meilen um ein Büro wohnt, bewegt ihr eure Hintern hierher".

Dieser Kommentar soll vergangene Woche in einem Meeting kurz nach Abschluss der Übernahme gefallen sein. Bisher galt VMware als sehr remote-freundliches Unternehmen, die Rückkehr ins Büro dürfte für viele Angestellte daher eine weitreichende Umstellung ihres Alltags mit sich bringen. Aktuell ist aber noch nicht klar, wie die Vorgabe umgesetzt werden soll oder was Verstösse bedeuten würden. Einen Grund für die Anpassung lieferte der CEO laut dem Bericht jedoch ebenfalls: "Zusammenarbeit ist wichtig und ein Schlüsselelement für die Aufrechterhaltung einer Kultur mit euren Kollegen".

Hock Tan war bereits zuvor für seine strenge Einstellung zur Remote-Arbeit bekannt. Wie verschiedene Medien (unter anderem "NBC") 2020 berichteten, soll er die Broadcom-Mitarbeitenden selbst während der Hochphase der Covid-Pandemie in die Büros zitiert haben.

CG (Continuous Grain) Silicon technology is the core technology behind System LCDs, next-generation functional devices developed jointly by the two companies in 1998. CG-silicon maintains atomic-level continuity at the crystal grain boundaries, thereby enabling electrons to travel through the semiconductor approximately 600 times faster than conventional amorphous silicon and approximately three times faster than low-temperature polysilicon. This technology allows digital logic, including LCD driver and power supplies, I/O interfaces, and signal processing circuitry, to be integrally formed on the same glass substrate as an LCD display. This achievement is expected to lead to dramatic reductions in component mounting area and the number of external parts, and will also contribute to lighter weights and thinner profiles as well as greater reliability in assembled systems.

Sharp and SEL have now succeeded in forming an 8-bit CPU <Z80> on a glass substrate, a world first. This achievement is based on further improvements in the level of crystallinity of the CG-silicon and the introduction of innovative process technology, and opens up the possibility of integrating on the same glass substrate not only functional peripheral components, particularly LCD display components and LCD driver ICs, but also a wide range of data processing circuit logic, including CPUs, memory, image compression/decompression circuitry, and the like. This new success based on CG-Silicon technology represents the first step on the road toward the development of futuristic ultra-thin "sheet computers" and "sheet TVs."

In October of this year, Sharp launched mass production of System LCDs designed for use in mobile devices such as cellular telephones and PDAs.
Both companies are now forging ahead with technology innovations aimed at developing full-fledged systems-on-a-panel appropriate for the "ubiquitous network" world we live in.
