Sanal Edamaruku under attack

** Sanal Edamaruku under attack for exposing Catholic “miracle” ! **
http://www.rationalistinternational.net/

*As he exposed the “miracle” of the drippling Jesus in Mumbai, revengeful Catholic Church leaders vowed to harass Sanal Edamaruku with an array of blasphemy cases. The harassment has started. Sanal can be arrested any moment.*

/“It is nothing new that the Catholic bishops try to sentence their opponents to the stake when they run out of arguments. Giordano Bruno’s is a case in point. But try as they may, they cannot stop me to stand for reason, science and historic facts. And I am not alone. Freedom of expression is under attack and we are going to defend it!”/

 - Sanal Edamaruku

***Exposing the “miracle”***

On 10th March, Sanal Edamaruku flew to Mumbai. The TV channel TV-9 had invited him to investigate a “miracle” that caused local excitement. He went with the TV team to Irla in Vile Parle to inspect the crucifix standing there in front of the Church of Our Lady of Velankanni. This crucifix had become the centre of attraction for an ever growing crowd of believers coming from far and wide. The news of the miracle spread like wild fire. For some days, there were little droplets of water trickling from Jesus’ feet. Hundreds of people came every day to pray and collect some of the “holy water” in bottles and vessels. Irla was about to become a pilgrimage centre.

But Sanal Edamaruku spoilt this prospect. Within minutes, he clearly identified the source of the water (a drainage near a washing room) and the mechanism how it reached Jesus feet (capillary action). The local church leaders, present during his investigation, were far from pleased. See the investigation in detail on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUqhq9MuRG8

*** TV debate with the Bishop ***

Some hours later, in a live program on TV-9, Sanal explained his findings and accused the Catholic Church of miracle mongering, as they were beating the big drum for the drippling Jesus statue with aggressive PR measures and by distributing photographs certifying the “miracle”. A heated debate began, in which the five church people, among them Fr. Augustine Palett, the priest of Our Lady of Velankanni church, and representatives of the Association of Concerned Catholics (AOCC) demanded that Sanal apologize. But he powerfully argued against them. Via telephone, Msgr. Agnelo Gracias, auxiliary bishop of Mumbai, intervened in order to rescue the image of the Catholic Church. He claimed the Church was “always cautious in attributing supernatural causes” to such phenomena and always striving “to find 'scientific' explanations.” He even assured the Pope was a friend of science. Sanal countered elegantly, referring to the case of Giordano Bruno. He also discussed the Vatican’s official process of canonization in which “miracles”, certified by a Vatican commission, are obligatory for every saint. Since there are more than 10,000 Catholic saints, the Vatican surely qualifies for “miracle mongering”. And the allegedly so science-loving Pope allows exorcism in the Vatican itself. According to recent press reports, he even personally lent a hand to cast out the devil from the body of a Swiss Guard man. In this highly interesting debate, Sanal triumphed over his shouting opponents. The whole TV program is recorded. You can watch an abridged version of it on YouTube
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfJ6_ftih0s

***Threat live on TV***

When they saw their hopes dashed to force Sanal to his knees and apologize, they publicly threatened to file a blasphemy case against him. Sanal pointed out that this would give him an excellent opportunity to support all his statements with evidence in a court of law, with the bishop of Mumbai in the witness box. Foaming with rage, the church people vowed to harass him by filing an array of cases against him in all Mumbai police stations. They did.

***Sanal can be arrested any moment***

We know of three petitions on the base of Article 295, Indian Penal Code that have been filed against Sanal.

Meantime, Mumbai police announced that they were out to arrest him.

Sanal can be arrested any moment. In every single place where a petition is filed against him. He could be forced to appear in person to answer them. If his answer is not found satisfactory, he could be arrested. He could be forced to fight a multitude of criminal cases in different places. This is not only immensely time and money consuming. Given the fanaticism of some Catholic believers, it can be a danger for his life.

***Sanal Edamaruku Defence Committee***

Rationalist International has formed a Sanal Edamaruku Defence Committe. The convener is Supreme Court lawyer and Human Rights activist Mr. N.D.Pancholi.

Catholic Church vs. Sanal Edamaruku
 May 9, 2012 (English)

**RATIONALIST INTERNATIONAL BULLETIN**

http://www.rationalistinternational.net

*Catholic Church versus Sanal Edamaruku:*
The noose is tightening at Mumbai
****

It is more than three weeks now that agents of the Catholic Church
pressed multiple blasphemy charges against Sanal Edamaruku to avenge
him for exposing their “miracle” of the water-dripping cross as a
job for the plumber. While the threat keeps looming over Sanal’s
head, ready to hit anytime, the Catholic Church is unleashing the
“/dogs of the Lord/”*). In a widely circulated public statement, a
fanatic Catholic group tries to invoke fatwa power and calls Sanal a
case for mental asylum.

/*) “Dogs of the Lord” (Latin: Domini canes) was the name, the
Dominicans loved to call themselves after the Vatican put them in
charge of the Inquisiton in the 13th century. In a Papal Bull, a Pope
with the endearing name “Innocent” (No. IV) gave them officially a
free hand to torture. This is a classical division of work./

On 11th of April, charges under Section 295 A, Indian Penal Code, have
been filed against Sanal Edamaruku in at least three Mumbai police
stations: in Juhu, in MIDC and in Andheri. Strangely, he did not
receive any official document about these cases up to now. The Mumbai
police refuse flatly to send copies of the complaints to Delhi – an
unusual violation of the standard procedure. Sanal did not receive any
summons either. Till today, there is nothing official about it -
except the phone calls of an inspector from Juhu police station, who
urges Sanal to come and get arrested. Recently, he calls every night.

What looks like a nightmare /a la/ Franz Kafka, is a simple strategy:
As long as the allegations against Sanal are not available in black
and white, he will not be able to file a reply. Thus the stage is set
for his arrest. In fact, that arrest – not any clarification – is
on the police agenda, has already been spilled by the inspector from
Juhu. Call it intimidation, attrition policy. This set-up aims at
restricting Sanal’s movements and paralyzing his work.

Enormous worldwide response

Sanal’s harassment for exposing a Catholic wannabe miracle has
caused an enormous worldwide response. It is reported and discussed in
many newspapers, TV and radio programs in India and abroad. It keeps
snowballing through thousands of blogs in various languages around the
globe. People in USA, Canada, Germany, Switzerland, France, Italy,
Poland, Russia, Brazil, Japan and even Vietnam are expressing their
solidarity with Sanal’s courageous position *in the controversial TV
discussion*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfJ6_ftih0s
that followed his *exposure of the dripping cross*
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kUqhq9MuRG8
. In the light of this great public attention, Sanal’s detractors
may have considered it advisable to slow down their moves for a while.
But now, things are warming up.

The Catholic Church is orchestrating the background music for the
countdown. It’s the rather nasty noise of the “dogs of the Lord”
yapping themselves hoarse. With a great smear campaign, a fanatic
Catholic group tries to stir up hatred against Sanal, branding his
arguments in the TV-9 debate as “anti-Catholic venom”. They try to
invoke fatwa power: Kindling the imagination how fanatic Islamists
might deal with such a blasphemer, they leave the decision if Sanal
“should be allowed to go scot free” to the mob. Finally they
propose that “one needn’t send such a person to jail, but rather
to a mental asylum...”

While his lawyers are preparing to defend his right to promote reason
and scientific temper and to expose fraudulent claims of
“miracles” of any – including Catholic – origin, Sanal
Edamaruku has made it clear that as a law-abiding citizen he was ready
to address the charges brought against him in front of any court of
law or investigating officer – provided a proper summons was issued
against him. However, he absolutely refused to comply with the
bishop’s demand and apologize or withdraw any of his statements made
in the TV-9 debate.

Instead he proposed that the authorities of the church of Velankanni
at Mumbai should publicly apologize for distributing the dirty
drainage water that was dripping from the cross to hundreds of
gullible people. Advertising a natural phenomenon as a “miracle”
to attract devotees and promoting them to drink unchecked dirty water
claiming it had curative properties is an irresponsible act - and
should be a punishable offence, too.

Unstoppable and in full swing:

Sanal’s new campaign against faith healers

Meantime Sanal Edamaruku is active in toppling the empires of Indian
faith healers of different religious origin. He initiated a systematic
campaign against one Nirmal Baba - once a failed business man from
Uttar Pradesh, who acquired “divine powers” and a “third eye”
and started a flourishing career as a godman. Nirmal invites devotees
to buy expensive tickets for his huge mass assemblies, during which he
would allegedly solve the problems of those who pay an exorbitant
extra sum. He would give them some simple exercises (making small
amendments to their diet plans or donating small amounts to strangers
etc.) and claim that would cure their chronic diseases or instantly
boost their broke business. A parade of fake witnesses – all being
paid for their services - would “prove” the baba’s success.
These stage-managed shows are filmed and run daily for hours as paid
advertisements on some 40 TV channels.

Now, Sanal’s campaign against Nirmal Baba broke the spell. Suddenly
TV channels that otherwise run his well paid ads zoomed in on the
millionaire godman’s fraudulent activities and the legal cases that
he is facing in several Indian states. During the last two weeks,
Sanal debated in sixteen live programs on various TV channels against
this charlatan. Nirmal’s daily collection that used to cross one
crore Rupees (about US $ 180,000) has come down to a few thousand
Rupees as a result of the campaign that Sanal lead.

Meantime Sanal is focusing public attention on Paul Dinakaran, one of
the most successful Christian faith healers in India. Dinakaran claims
to be in constant contact with Jesus Christ. Imitating his US
counterparts, he organizes huge gatherings and offers blessings for a
price. Good results in entrance exams, resolving of a business crisis,
instant health solutions (including, of course: making the deaf hear
and the lame walk) - everything has its tag. Thousands of people are
lured with dramatic music and Paul’s hammy theatric displays of
great feelings to come to his Prayer Tower in Chennai or join
Christian faith healing festivals which draw crowds up to 500000
people in many cities of India.

When Sanal Edamaruku started exposing Paul Dinakaran on one of the big
national Hindi channels, a live program scheduled for thirty minutes
was extended to three hours as the viewership numbers hit record
heights. The discussion was watched by millions, when Sanal draw the
line to Dinakaran’s Vatican backed competitors in the Divine Retreat
Centre at Muringoor in Kerala and to the Catholic Church’s
unparalleled track record of miracle mongering throughout history. He
also spoke about his exposure of the dripping cross at Mumbai and of
the harassment that he is currently facing from the revengeful
Catholic authorities and their henchmen. The campaign against
Christian faith healers will continue in various TV channels. Sanal
has already committed his participation in panel discussions in all
major TV channels during the coming days.

Various Catholic organizations are stepping up efforts to stop
Sanal’s hugely influential national campaigns against miracle
mongering. They want to silence him and to bankrupt the Indian
Rationalist Association with multiple cases.

We request you to support Sanal Edamaruku’s campaigns and to help
defending him against all legal and extra legal attacks.

Religion Journal: Christ Statue in Mumbai Prompts Blasphemy Spat

By Joanna Sugden

Sanal Edamaruku, pictured, has spent 30 years debunking miracles and
exposing fraudulent faith healers.

The man facing blasphemy charges after he claimed water dripping from a statue of Christ in Mumbai was not miraculous but the result of a badly plumbed toilet is preparing to ask India’s Supreme Court to abolish the blasphemy law.

Sanal Edamaruku is accused by Catholic groups in Mumbai of breaking the Indian Penal Code, which outlaws “deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.”

Mr. Edamaruku, a rationalist who has spent 30 years debunking miracles and exposing fraudulent faith healers, denies the offense and claims the law is being misused in order to silence him.

His lawyers are asking the High Court in Mumbai to intervene to stop the charges going further,  but Mr. Edamaruku also plans to make a separate challenge to the blasphemy law in the Supreme Court in Delhi.

“I see this as an opportunity to make sure this law isn’t misused any more against anybody,” said Mr. Edamaruku who is president of Rationalist International, a group working to promote science and reason in place of religious belief and superstition.

The blasphemy law, created in 1860, goes against the fundamental right of freedom of expression and should be abolished, he says.

Those invoking it against him said they were offended by Mr. Edamaruku’s comments that clergy at Velankanni Church in Mumbai were using the sight of water dripping from the feet of a Christ statue to make money from visiting pilgrims.

The Catholic Secular Forum filed a first information report with the police in Mumbai, while the Association of Concerned Catholics and Maharashtra Christian Youth Forum also objected to Mr. Edamaruku’s claims. The groups also accuse Mr. Edamaruku of alleging the Catholic Church practises idolatry.

“They want to avenge and put me in prison,” said Mr. Edamaruku, who fears he could be arrested immediately if he returns to Mumbai.

The Catholic Bishop of Mumbai Agnelo Gracias has called on Mr. Edamaruku to apologize for “hurting” the Catholic community and said that no money had been collected at the shrine.

In a letter to The Examiner, a Catholic Newsletter, the bishop said he did not believe the water to be a miracle. “But to make that an occasion to hurl false allegations against the Christian community and its leaders is quite another matter,” Bishop Agnelo wrote.

Although the groups who have taken the cases against Mr. Edamaruku do not represent the bishop, he appeared to praise them for their actions. “We can rejoice that there are some people who have the courage to stand up when the attempts are made to besmirch the name of the Catholic community.”

Father Nigel Barrett, coordinator of the Catholic Communications Centre in Mumbai, said that the miracle had not yet been officially ascertained because Velankanni Church had not referred the matter to the bishop for the proper process of verification to take place.

Some in the Catholic media have come out in support of Mr. Edamaruku, including Deepika, a Catholic newspaper based in the southern state of Kerala. Mr. Edamaruku believes the groups lining up against him are “fundamentalist,” taking their inspiration from Islamic fundamentalism in order “to preserve their religion.”

During his working life, Mr. Edamaruku, who is from Kerala, has been attacked with fire by an “angry god-man” and faced the black magic of a tantrik priest trying to kill him during a televised stunt.

But he says he has never felt as much under threat as he does now.

“This is the first time I have had cases filed against me… I don’t want unexpected people to come and attack me, so only close friends know where to find me,” Mr. Edamaruku told India Real Time.

He added that his case echoes that of Salman Rushdie, whose book the “The Satanic Verses” was labelled blasphemous and led Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran’s leader, to issue a Fatwa ordering the author to be put to death. Mr. Rushdie didn’t appear at the Jaipur Literary Festival
http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052970203718504577180393077812140.html/
this year because of claims he would be targeted by assassins from the Mumbai underworld if he turned up.

“It’s the same category of threat … just a different form,” Mr. Edamaruku said.

However, he said he refuses to be bowed by the cases against him.

“I’m determined, I have a duty to develop scientific temper and promote inquiry so on these two grounds we will challenge the very veracity of this law in the Supreme Court.”

Mr. Edamaruku added that if the blasphemy law could not be overturned then a committee to prevent it being used as “a mechanism to stop someone’s freedom” should properly police it.

“I believe in absolute freedom of expression in any free society people should have the freedom to ridicule to criticize or to be ridiculed. That should be guaranteed in any civil society,” he said.

Rationalist International has conducted over 2,000 outreach programs in villages around India to promote reason and “liberate” people from belief in miracles, superstitions and fraudulent faith healers, according to its president.

“India is a very fast developing country, we have a very serious interest in science and we are going around the world serving people with our IT and science knowledge,” Mr. Edamaruku said.

“That’s one India that is in the 20th century. We have another India that’s in the 16thcentury – we are in constant conflict and it is 16th century India that is pulling us back.”

Urgent call for help: Free Sanal Edamaruku!
« Reply #3 on: June 13, 2012, 04:21:19 AM »

June 13, 2012
*RATIONALIST INTERNATIONAL BULLETIN*
http://www.rationalistinternational.net/

*The noose is further tightening*

A petition for “anticipatory bail”, filed by Sanal Edamaruku to the Delhi High Court, has been turned down on formal grounds. One of the reasons given by the judge is a plain cynicism: There was “no apprehension of arrest” since Sanal did not receive any official document from the Mumbai police and it was therefore uncertain if at all any charges had been filed against him! In fact, in violation of the official procedure the police has so far refused to serve any written notice. However, the charges registered under C.R. No. 61 of 2012 with Juhu Police Station, Mumbai and C.R. No. 124 of 2012 with M.I.D.C. Police Station, Andheri (East), Mumbai for offence under section 295-A of I.P.C. are very much for real!

Since the court turned down the petition for “anticipatory bail”, the inspector in charge at Juhu Police Station has intensified his telephonic activites. He is pressing Sanal to turn himself in immediately or face arrest. If he is arrested now, he will most likely be detained in jail until court proceedings are concluded, which could take several years. Under this grave threat, Sanal is advised to stay away from his office and his home as well as from live TV appearances. But he would not budge an inch from the public frontlines.

In this situation, public support is crucial. Several initiatives are being taken in India and abroad to try and save Sanal Edamaruku from the danger of imprisonment.

“We can only imagine the conditions of an Indian jail, and we don’t want our friend to find out.”

James Randi called upon his readers to help fighting this ridiculous, archaic attack on reason.

“The single most important thing for Sanal at the moment is international support and pressure from the outside.”

Caspar Melville, editor of the New Humanist, initiated the Online Petition.

“Sanal exposed a fraudulent miracle. Since when has the unmasking of a fraud been 'offensive'?”

Richard Dawkins was one of the first signatories.

The Rationalist Association of UK created an Online Petition calling upon the Vatican and the Catholic authorities in Mumbai, particularly the Archbishop and Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai, to clarify their Church's position on the attempts to silence Sanal’s criticisms through legal channels, and asking them to use their influence with local Catholics to encourage them to publicly withdraw their charges.

The Petition also calls upon the government of India, the world’s largest democracy, to defend free speech by making it clear that Indian laws are not to be used to suppress scientific knowledge and reasonable criticism of religious mysticism. The Indian government is asked to “intercede to ensure this matter is settled without further harassment of a courageous and honest man.”

After the targeted number of five thousand signatures was reached in just a few days, the target has now been extended to ten thousand. Please joint this campaign! Imagine: every new signature despatches automatically three mails: one to the Cardinal Oswald Gracias, Archbishop of Mumbai, one to the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India, and one Bishop Agnelo Rufino Gracias, Auxiliary Bishop of Mumbai. We hope it makes these gentlemen think when they find more than five thousand petitions in their inbox!

Please join the Online Petition of the Rationalist Association (UK)!
Every signature counts!

Re: New catholic riots in India?
« Reply #4 on: August 21, 2012, 07:04:16 AM »

After some time of silence here is news from Sanal Edamaruku, who made an escape to Europe.

The religiots in India still try to massacre him in person and in court. And the criminal organization behind all the attacks, the Catholic Church of India, still pursues its insane, criminal, and diabolic Inquisition, denying simple and plain facts that are publicly visible to everyone.

Sanal Edamaruku says, "NO."

Sanal Edamaruku says, “NO.”

By SANAL EDAMARUKU - RATIONALIST INTERNATIONAL BULLETIN
Added: Monday, 23 July 2012 at 7:52 PM

“I can understand that they might be inspired by the stories of Inquisition and Witch Hunting in the middle ages. We live in 21st century. There are courageous people who would defend the right to speak what they are convinced about, even if stakes are invoked against them. I am one amongst them. I would not apologize nor succumb to any pressures.” Sanal Edamaruku

Sanal Edamaruku is on a pre-planned lecture tour across Europe. When the police came on 4th July to his house in Delhi to arrest him, they had to return empty handed. But things did not end there. These days, they are making their presence felt with frequent appearances at Sanal’s home. They bother neighbours and friends with queries and keep observing without ostentation. What is hatching up?

Meantime a prominent Indian Catholic has made an appeal to the Catholic Church leadership to withdraw the case against Sanal Edamaruku. So far, the answer is deep silence on the side of the bishops – and a shrill demand for Sanal’s apology for debunking the “miracle” on the side of their fanatic henchmen. Two sides of a coin. While Catholic circles are abuzz with speculation, reason could still prevail - if there is enough public pressure that is!

John Dayal is a respected figure in the Indian Catholic community. He is a member of the National Integration Council of India, the Secretary-General of the All India Christian Council. and a past president of the All India Catholic Union. He has been Sanal’s opponent in several TV debates and is quite critical of his rationalism. His appeal to the Catholic Church leadership to end the “obnoxious controversy” by withdrawing the case against Sanal is carrying weight. Definitively written from a Catholic perspective, but dictated by a sense of fairness and balance, it is intended to show the Church a somewhat dignified way out. Will they use the golden bridge?

In his column in the Sunday Indian Magazine, John Dayal writes:

[inside quote]
“As someone who is in touch both with the Mumbai church and Sanal Edmaruku, I am pleading the return of a sense of proportion in this issue.....

I believe Christ is absolutely capable of defending Himself, if perhaps not the church in India. These statements by Sanal or the probe by his Rationalists must not be taken as an attack on the church or on the community….

The faithful of Mumbai think they are defending faith when they go on hunger strikes against books of fiction or films from Hollywood and Bollywood. But in reality they are defending their own positions and constituencies and do not want them to be exposed to the sunlight.

Christ does not have to drip water from crucifixes to prove the love he has for each one of us. His healing is deeper and needs no instruments. I have experienced this in my own life. Catholics of Mumbai possibly realise the controversy is not getting the Church any new friends, nor is it adding to its lustre.

It is time the church leadership really forgave Sanal.....

The police case against Sanal Edamaruku should be withdrawn as a sign that a mature Church in India needs no props for the depth of its faith in God.”
[/inside quote]

John Dayal’s initiative has been widely quoted in church circles. Remarkably, he appeals to the Church leadership – not to fringe laity organisations - to “forgive” Sanal and withdraw the case against him. So far, however, the Catholic Church leaders did not honour his proposal with an answer. The Bishop of Mumbai – who happens to be the president of the Catholic Bishops Conference of India – is maintaining his silence.

Joseph Dias of the Mumbai based Christian “Secular” Forum, who launched one of the police complaints, has refused to consider withdrawal unless Sanal apologizes. In a Catholic blog he is even quotes as stating: “We first asked him to apologise to us. Now the time for apology has long gone. He must be arrested.”

Meantime the Human Rights appeal launched by the Rationalist Association (UK) has crossed the ten thousand mark of signatories, among them famous names such as Richard Dawkins, PZ Meyers, John Opie, Noel Doye, George Daole-Wellman and many others. It is intended to pass the petition to Catholic Church authorities in Europe and to the Vatican. Meantime, the more signatures it gets, the better.

Please help us keeping up the pressure: sign the Human Rights petition and invite more signatories.

Please help us keeping up the fight: support the Sanal Edamaruku Defence Fund with your donation.

Ratzinger not only keeps silent, his silence enables the Indian wing of his billion Dollar organization to continue its illegal and highly criminal attacks on journalists and media.

 *It’s 10th of March again...***

Sanal Edamaruku spent a relaxed afternoon **on the first anniversary of the miracle exposure in Mumbai **with his skeptic friends Tulpesh Patel and Marte at their apartment in Norway

Time flies. One year has passed. On 10th of March, 2012, Sanal Edamaruku has been in Mumbai to investigate the Catholic “miracle’’ of Jesus’ dripping feet. It was the day that changed his life.

The blasphemy case that a handful fanatics with the blessings of the church leadership pressed against him did not reach anywhere. So far, not even a court procedure has been initiated. But still Sanal is haunted and in danger to be arrested, if he goes back home to India.

Exactly this is the malicious intent of the maneuver. The Catholic Church did not even try to defend its flopped “miracle” with a single argument. They did not try either to file a defamation case against Sanal’s alleged offences. As always, they prefer to keep mum and manipulate and misuse draconian old laws, to get Sanal arrested. It is about plotting revenge and muzzling a critical voice.

Popes come and go, but the Catholic Church stays true to its medieval principles

"They that sow the wind, shall reap the whirlwind", it is said in the Book of Hosea.

Sanal Edamaruku is currently on a lecture tour through Norway, infecting great audiences by his courageous and enthusiastic fight for reason.

Sanal Edamaruku tells the Catholic Church: “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind”

Tulpesh Patel reports Sanal Edamaruku's trip to Norway**

On the 10th of March 2012, leading Indian rationlist Sanal Edamaruku was called out to a Mumbai chapel to investigate claims that a statue of Jesus was spontaneously weeping tears. Despite his long a colourful career debunking superstitions and religious myths, there was no way that Sanal could have foreseen that the reaction to his simple explanation – that the ‘weeping’ was caused by the capillary action of water from a nearby blocked sewage drain – would change his life forever and become a watershed case in securing India’s secular future.

Instead of apologising to the thousands of pilgrims to the church for letting them drink the filthy sewage water under whilst under the impression that it was blessed and holy, the Catholic bishop went on the offensive and demanded an apology from Sanal. When rightly refused, on the grounds that he had done nothing wrong, He was charged with violating 295(a) of the Indian Penal Code, India’s “blasphemy law,” which prohibits “deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings or any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.” The charges effectively forced Sanal into exile to avoid a jail term of indeterminate length, without hope of bail, or, as was clear from the Church’s influence over the police, an absolutely fair and proper trial. In June that year, he left India to live in with friends in Helsinki, still yet to return to his home, family and friends.

Anniversary: Sanal Edamaruku with Tulpesh and Marte Patel

A year to the day later, he was sat in our tiny flat in Lørenskog, eating my wife’s homemade blueberry scones and telling his story, my pride at being able to host one of my rationalist heroes for lunch, tempered by the knowledge that it was brought about because he has been forced from his home country to live in Finland, fighting his case from abroad and waiting for such a time when the Church and the police back down and guarantee him the fair chance to defend his case.

Instead of being cowed by the Church’s bullying tactics, Sanal has taken the opportunity created by his exile to take some of the issues facing India today to the world stage, to bring put a spotlight on the divergent worlds that India occupies: the growing, modern economic superpower and the steadfastly superstitious and religious world that is stifling free and critical thought. It's with cheeky glint in his eye he quotes Hosea 8:7 from the Bible: “For they have sown the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind”

Visa issues forced Sanal’s trip to Norway to be cancelled in September of last year, but once I heard he was still interested in coming, I took up the baton and decided to see what I could organise. With a generous budget from Skepsis,
http://skepsis.no/index.php?page=vis_nyhet&NyhetID=1610
a little help from the Human-Etisk Forbund, and the invaluable time and effort of a a dedicate group of volunteers from Oslo and Trondheim Skeptics in the Pub, we managed to put together a series of fantastically well-attended events in Oslo, Bergen and Trondheim
http://scicommbobulate.blogspot.no/2013/03/sanal-edamarukus-skeptical-speaking.html?q=sanal

I’ve been meaning to write about Sanal’s visit and collate all the different reports for a while now, but my fingers were drawn away from the keyboard and stuck in other pies, and my attempts to fight the biological necessity of sleep failed me; my body insisted on taking back the time it was owed.

Thanks to the hard work of Alvin Brattli, Sanal’s talk on March 8th, which coincide with Skepsis’ AGM (at which I was voted on to take position of Events Manager; HOORAY!) is available in full, split over three parts. Links to his Oslo speech is given below:

Norwegian readers can read Sanal’s interview with Even Gran for Fri Tanke

here, and for an slightly different take on his story there’s an interview with one of Norway’s leading Christian newspapers, Vårt Land

(also in Norwegian). To read the article, click here.

There’s also a podcast interview, for which Saltklypa
http://saltklypa.no/2012/06/24/episode-57/
came out of semi-retirement, during which you can learn of Sanal’s other passions, such as the traditional Indian dance Kathakali (in which he is trained and has directed award-winning Shakespeare inspired performances), painting and drumming. The podcast’s being edited at the moment but should be up soon!

I also have an article in the next edition of Argument
http://argument-tidsskrift.blogspot.no/
(see page 41), out in a couple of days, 'Who give a flying fakir about the evidence?' inspired by part of one of Sanal's talks on Indian 'holy' men. I'll post it up here as soon as it's available.

Sanal was lovely enough to include his visit to our flat for lunch in the Rationalist International bulletin
http://www.rationalistinternational.net
,and my very lovely wife has now also volunteered to translate the regular newsletter into Norwegian, which you can subscribe to here.
http://rationalist-news.net/?p=subscribe&id=2

From his talks, and the many chats we had over dinner, I learned some important lessons from Sanal on how to be a good skeptic and how to reach people in effective ways. Here are just some of them (in no particular order):

• You won’t win people over by laughing at them, but genuine humour is a whole lot better than derision and sarcasm.

• Aim your ire at those in power; most people do not hold the same views as those in positions of (particularly religious) authority and it’s important not to alienate them by tarnishing them with the same brush (Sanal is clear that his problem is with the Christian authorities in India, not Christians themselves).

• Be careful not to get stitched up. When investigating the weeping Jesus, Sanal was offered a hammer and told to strike the statue to prove his theory. Knowing that it would only take for him to hold the hammer for a photograph to be taken and misrepresented as him attempting to destroy a religious figure, he stayed well clear.

• Make sure that your work/campaigns survive you and your enthusiasm. His big personality and decades of good work mean that Sanal is inextricably linked to rationalism in India, but one of Sanal’s aims is to start phasing himself out of senior positions with the Indian Rationalist Association (if they let him; at the last election they voted him in in absentia). (This really spoke to me because it’s something I didn’t manage to achieve with the Aston Humanist Society. I had a great time and a great small committee of helpers, but I never managed to get it running on it’s own steam, something which I saw frequently happen to new societies.)

• Demonstrations are much more powerful than explanations at effectively debunking myths and superstitious ideas. His Rationalist Reality Theatre roadshows don’t just tell people, they show them.

• Debunking a myth is good, but teaching people how to debunk myths is even better because that increases outreach exponentially. To date, Sanal’s youth workshops with have reached ten of thousands of people, who now have the skills to and knowledge to help others break free from superstitions. This a model that more free-thinking groups and societies should adopt. The picture below shows young rationalists being showed how easy it is to perform the levitation trick.

Sanal's fight is by no means over. An initial online petition calling for the Catholic Church to drop the charges reached tens of thousand of signatures, but, for the time being, the religious authorities have chosen to simply ignore it. A new petition with the support of the Rationalist Association (UK) is underway, which you can sign here. As Sanal continues to travel the world, telling his story and inspiring rationalists, the hope is that the Catholic church will back down, allow Sanal to fight the case properly in court and hopefully set a precedent that will see an end to India's ludicrous blasphemy law.

It was a real honour to host someone who's work is so inspiring and important. On behalf of Skepsis, HEF and everyone who helped organise and attend Sanal's visit to Norway, I can say that we are proud to have played some small part in keeping the winds of Sanal’s
whirlwind blowing.
