ANU Press Newsletter: October 2019Dear readers,
We have enjoyed an incredible quarter highlighted by the successful launch of Rosalie Gascoigne: A Catalogue Raisonné at the National Gallery of Australia, the 50th Terra Australis book celebration and the launch of the new ANU Press Languages imprint.
On top of all that we have published 36 titles, and have 18 titles currently in production. Downloads are looking fantastic for 2019 with over 2.5 million downloads so far, consolidating our position as one of the world’s leading resources for open-access research.
Some of our classic titles are attracting more attention, with Degei's Descendants receiving over 20,000 downloads, and Global Water with over 15,000 downloads.

If you haven’t had a chance to read the latest issue of ANU Reporter, there is a fantastic feature on ANU Press editor Michael Braby discussing the challenges and rewards of hunting new species of butterflies! His book Atlas of Butterflies and Diurnal Moths in the Monsoon Tropics of Northern Australia is available to download for free!
During Peer Review Week, the Australian Publishers Association Scholarly and Journals Committee (SJC) hosted a Peer Review Seminar at CSIRO’s Black Mountain facility on 12th September. The full-day event covered topics such as the current state of peer review globally; the importance of peer review in a world of censorship, fake news and alternative facts; and digital technology and peer review. The event was well attended by both publishers and academics; Emily Hazlewood represented ANU Press and assisted in organising the event as a member of the SJC.
The Publication Subsidy for 2019 is now closed; five exciting new titles received financial support this round. The next round will open in April 2020.
ANU Press Languages Imprint
ANU Press is delighted to announce the release of a new imprint, ANU Press Languages. This imprint is dedicated to exploring language teaching and aims to promote exceptional language-based texts, including textbooks, educational materials and works from a diverse range of disciplines. Content from many of the textbooks published through this series complement courses taught at The Australian National University and are relevant readings for other universities.

What do we know about the current realities of work and its likely futures? What choices must we make that will affect those futures?
The Realities and Futures of Work, written by David Peetz, Professor of Employment Relations at Griffith University, discusses these questions and covers topics ranging from the ‘mega-drivers of change’ at work, power, globalisation, financialisation, management, workers, digitalisation, the gig economy, gender, climate change, regulation and deregulation.
In doing so, it refers to some of the great works of science fiction and demolishes several myths: that the employment relationship is doomed, that we are all heading to becoming ‘freelancers’ or ‘gig workers’ one day, that most jobs will be destroyed by technological change, that the growth in jobs will mainly be in STEM fields, that we will no longer value collectivism as we will all be ‘individuals’, or that the death of unionism is inevitable.
There are a number of books and many articles being written about the future of work. It is a subject that seems to come in cycles every decade, but currently it is something of a ‘fad’. This book is different from most because it is soundly based on recent research and is written in a very accessible manner for any reader.

Book Launches
The Court as Archive was launched on 5 September at the Fellows Road Law Theatres by Linda Mulcahy, Professor of Socio-Legal Studies and Director of the Centre for Socio-Legal Studies at Oxford University and Professor of Law at ANU College of Law.
The Court as Archive
This collection of essays addresses what it means for contemporary Australian superior courts of record to not only have constitutional and procedural duties to documents as a matter of law, but also to acknowledge obligations to care for those materials in a way that understands their public meaning and public value for the Australian people, in the past, in the present and for the future.
On 17 September we launched Rosalie Gascoigne: A Catalogue Raisonné at the National Gallery of Australia. The book has received a very positive response with the limited edition hardback already selling out. If you want to catch up on the discussion about the book with National Gallery Director Nick Mitzevich and author Martin Gascoigne, please see the NGA’s live stream of the event.

On 25 September a celebration was held for the 50th Terra Australia title. This was a timely celebration as 2019 marks 50 years of archaeology at ANU. We also took this opportunity to launch four Terra Australis titles that were recently published: The Archaeology of Sulawesi, Drawing in the Land, The Spice Islands in Prehistory and Archaeologies of Island Melanesia. The event was held at Harry Hartog, and it was a wonderful success with many copies of the books sold.
