SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY, Calif. (WZTV) — A mother has surrendered her newborn twins to a fire station under the Safe Haven law.
San Bernardino County Fire in California said the young mom arrived at the station on Monday, stating that she'd just given birth to twins and wanted to leave the babies at the station under safe surrender laws.
Fire crews said the babies were both in good health, cleaned up and well fed. The twins were transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital for further assessment. SBCF said the mom refused medical attention but was provided information on how to reclaim her babies if she wished to do so in the future.
“This is exactly why the Safe Surrender program was created,” Fire Chief Mark Hartwig said. “This young mother did the right thing by bringing her babies to the fire station. Regardless of your circumstances, the Safe Surrender program is a viable and loving option - no questions asked.”
In Tennessee, the state's Safe Haven law allows moms of newborns to surrender unharmed babies to certain facilities within 72 hours of birth. As long as the baby is unharmed, the mom, or parents, can't be prosecuted and are assured confidentiality.
Tennessee's law went into effect in 2001. Officials say 80 babies have been surrendered in the state since April 2015.
