Would you trust your doctor or dentist to give you medical attention if you knew they didn?t have a valid doctor?s degree? What about your child's teacher? Would you trust them to educate your child without the right qualifications behind their name?

It takes three years to complete an undergraduate degree, one year to obtain an Honours degree, at least two years for a Masters degree and a minimum of two years to complete a Doctorate degree at a recognised tertiary institution, in other words, a minimum of eight years of academia in total before a person can walk away with the prestigious title of Doctor. With this title comes responsibility; people will engage in professionals? services trusting that they are thought leaders and experts in their specific domain of study and assuming that they have conducted intensive research within a specific study field.

However, it seems that some so called "professionals? are making a mockery of the academic process; those individuals that deem an online doctorate degree, obtainable for a few thousand Rands and within less than a year, as justifiable cause to use the title Doctor.

The public too often have blind faith when it comes to the professional services offered by doctors, teachers, homeopaths, dentists, etc., and sometimes get taken for a ride. They may well be charged exorbitant amounts of money for a service, based on the assumption that the service provider has years of academic knowledge and experience while this is not always the case.

The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) is the responsible body for the evaluation of foreign qualifications at a national level and plays an important role in upholding the standard of the academic fraternity in South Africa.

However, what can and should be done in instances where individuals acquire online tertiary degrees that are not recognised by SAQA? Should the public not have the right to know that the qualifications these "professionals? have are not recognised? That they are misrepresenting their industry and making a lot of money from the public under false pretences? What action is available to the public?

An example of an unaccredited institution is Bircham International University (BIU) (formerly Oxford International University). According to SAQA they are not listed as a recognised university by any valid accrediting authority. This university is furthermore listed as a non-recognised university by the educational authorities of the State of Oregon in the USA, which is a leading authority on detecting and publishing the names of non-recognised universities. As such, SAQA has indicated that they cannot accept qualifications conferred by the said university for evaluation purposes.

So, how credible and ethical are these practices to be selling products and services without accredited qualifications?

In the past three months alone according to BIU?s website, at least nine South African?s have obtained degrees from this institution. Their degrees are not queried as they are self-employed and they do not have to comply to rigorous evaluation procedures; something that would have been necessary had they applied for a position in a corporate organisation or in a regulated profession. These nine degrees included Homeopathy, Psychology Doctorate degrees, Masters Degree in Security and Emergency Management and a BSc - Scientific Nutrition.


The Tina Cowley Reading Centres who help learners with reading problems are also an example of an organisation that is implementing methodologies and selling their services based on the owner?s qualifications, of which a doctorate degree was obtained through BIU.

Parents and the general public need to be warned against these professionals practising businesses with dubious qualifications and should take action and not be afraid to ask questions regarding where their qualifications were obtained. Currently there is no forum to report these "professionals? with questionable degrees. Has the time not come to have a watchdog in place where organisations and individuals are discredited for misrepresentation?

Bircham International University (in Madrid, Spain) was established in England as Oxford International University in 1992 by Deric N. Bircham. The name was changed in 2000. The organization has operated in Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, England, Japan, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico, New Zealand, South Africa, Spain, Taiwan, and the United States (Florida, Maine, and Texas). It is a private distance learning institution that offers educacion no reglada (unregulated education) that does not lead to a degree officially recognized by the Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia of Spain. It operates in Kenya without authority from the Commission for Higher Education. It operates in the United States but it is not listed in “2008-2009 Accredited Institutions of Postsecondary Education,” a publication of the American Council on Education.

AUSTRALIA

Australian Maritime College (in Launceston, Tasmania), established in 1978, enrolled its first students in 1980. It became an institute of the University of Tasmania on 1 January 2008. The College has three components: National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability, National Centre for Maritime Engineering and Hydrodynamics, and National Centre for Ports and Shipping.

CANADA

Lansbridge University (in New Brunswick) is not authorized to operate in British Columbia.

Vancouver University Worldwide (in Vancouver, British Columbia) is not an officially recognized degree-granting institution in British Columbia.

DOMINICA

On 2 July 2008, Dixie E. Randock was sentenced by U.S. District Court in Spokane, Washington (USA) to three years in prison after pleading guilty in March 2008 to fraud-conspiracy charges related to selling fake degrees online in the name of Saint Regis University, which she claimed was located in Dominica or Liberia when in fact she operated it out of rural Spokane. She and Steven K. Randock (her husband) and Heidi Kae Lorhan (her daughter), who also pled guilty in March 2008, operated diploma mills under dozens of other names as well including James Monroe University. Blake A. Carlson and Richard J. Novak pled guilty to related charges.

ENGLAND

Quality Assurance Commission Limited is not an officially recognized accrediting organization.

Middlesex University awards doctoral degrees in two ways: based on a thesis, or based on public works. In 2006-2007, it awarded 45 Ph.D. degrees based on a thesis, 4 Ph.D. degrees based on public works, 28 professional doctorates based on a thesis (D.Prof. or D.Psych.), and 3 D.Prof. degrees based on public works. The diploma for a degree based on public works identifies that basis. To obtain a degree based on public works, in any field of study taught by the University, candidates must provide their own published works and a context statement of 10,000 to 30,000 words prepared under the supervision of the University, and they must defend these items at an oral examination. Works accepted for publication but not yet published are acceptable if supported by a letter of verification from the publisher.

FINLAND

Aalto Korkeakoulu (Aalto University), established by a charter granted by the Ministry of Education on 25 June 2008, is being formed via merger of Helsingin Kauppakorkeakoulu (Helsinki School of Economics) [also translated as Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration], established in 1911, Teknillinen Korkeakoulu (University of Technology) [also translated as Helsinki University of Technology], established in 1908, and Taideteollinen Korkeakoulu (University of Art and Design) [also translated as University of Art and Design Helsinki], established in 1871. The new university will begin operating on 1 August 2009.

Ita-Suomen Yliopisto (Eastern Finland University) [also translated as University of Eastern Finland] will be established on 1 January 2010 via merger of Joensuun Yliopisto (University of Joensuu), established in 1969, and Kuopion Yliopisto (University of Kuopio), which was established in 1966 but enrolled its first students in 1972. The new university will have four faculties: health sciences, humanities and behavioral sciences, science and forestry, and social sciences, business and law.

Keski-Suomen Yliopisto (Central Finland University) will be established on 1 January 2010 via merger of Jyvaskylan Yliopisto (University of Jyvaskyla), established in 1983, Tampereen Teknillinen Korkeakoulu (Tampere University of Technology), established in 1965, and Tampereen Yliopisto (University of Tampere), which was established as Civic College in Helsinki in 1925, moved to Tampere and renamed School of Social Sciences in 1960, and renamed University of Tampere in 1966.

Maanpuolustuskorkeakoulu (National Defense College), a university-equivalent institution, is operated by the Ministry of Defense.

Metropolia Ammattikorkeakoulu (Metropolia Vocational Higher School) [also translated as Metropolia Polytechnic, and as Helsinki Metropolia University of Applied Sciences] was established on 1 August 2008 via merger of EVTEK Ammattikorkeakoulu (EVTEK Vocational Higher School) [also translated as EVTEK Polytechnic, and as EVTEK University of Applied Sciences] and Helsingin Ammattikorkeakoulu Stadia (Helsinki Vocational Higher School Stadia) [also translated as Helsinki Polytechnic Stadia]. The new institution has four faculties: culture, economics and business administration, health care and social services, and technology. {EVTEK Ammattikorkeakoulu  was established in 1985 as Espoo-Vantaan Ammattikorkeakoulu (Espoo-Vantaa Vocational Higher School) [also translated as Espoo-Vantaa Institute of Technology] and was renamed EVTEK Ammattikorkeakoulu in 1996. Poliisiammattikorkeakoulu (Police Higher Vocational School) [also known as Polisyrkeshogskolan (Police College)], a polytechnic-equivalent institution, is operated by the Ministry of the Interior.

Turun Kauppakorkeakoulu (Turku School of Economics and Business Administration), established in 1950, and Turun Yliopisto (University of Turku), established in 1920, will merge to form a new university in 2010.

University of the Arctic, established in Rovaniemi on 12 June 2001, is a multinational cooperative network of 103 universities, colleges, and other organizations committed to higher education and research in the Arctic region.

Yrkeshogskolan Novia (Novia Polytechnic) [also translated as Novia University of Applied Sciences] was established on 1 August 2008 as a network institution with branches in seven coastal towns in the Swedish-speaking region of southwestern and western Finland. The language of instruction is Swedish.

INDIA

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (near Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala), operated by the Indian Space Research Organisation, was deemed to be a university in January 2008, for an initial period of five years.

Nirma University of Science and Technology (in Ahmedabad, Gujarat), established in 2003, offers a five-year integrated program in pharmacy leading to a Bachelor of Pharmacy Honours degree [B.Pharm. Hons.] designed to meet the requirements for licensure as a pharmacist in the United States and in other countries. Admission requires completion of higher secondary education. Applicants who received a Bachelor of Pharmacy [B.Pharm.] degree upon completion of a four-year program at this university or at another university in India are admitted to the fifth year of the five-year program.

KENYA

Bircham International University (in Madrid, Spain) operates in Kenya without authority from the Commission for Higher Education.

LIBERIA

On 2 July 2008, Dixie E. Randock was sentenced by U.S. District Court in Spokane, Washington (USA) to three years in prison after pleading guilty in March 2008 to fraud-conspiracy charges related to selling fake degrees online in the name of Saint Regis University, which she claimed was located in Dominica or Liberia when in fact she operated it out of rural Spokane. She and Steven K. Randock (her husband) and Heidi Kae Lorhan (her daughter), who also pled guilty in March 2008, operated diploma mills under dozens of other names as well including James Monroe University. Blake A. Carlson and Richard J. Novak pled guilty to related charges.

Pickering University, incorporated in Hawaii on 3 August 1994 and operated out of a mail-forwarding company located in a shopping mall in Honolulu, was also known as Pickering University The United Congregational Church and as Pickering University The United Congregational Church Society of Friends Group. A circuit court in Hawaii dissolved the Pickering University corporation on 16 May 2003.

University of Berkley (in Illinois and Michigan) is not listed in “2007-2008 Accredited Institutions of Postsecondary Education,” a publication of the American Council on Education.

Villa Julie College (in Stevenson, Maryland) was renamed Stevenson University in June 2008.

What is it, that gives a REAL value to a diploma?

In the first place it is WHAT YOU LEARNED.

So, who gives a damn about a "Transcript" or "Supplements"? Read the following lines and try to find the spot:

Who would be interested in hiding a "remote" stuff? Only people who would try to hide that. That is: impostors, who just want to boast.

"The diploma and other graduation documents will always be issued in English."

So people will not realize that the whole fraud is carried out in Spain.
