Fact Check-Quote misattributed to George Orwell about society drifting from the truth continues to circulate online

By Reuters Fact Check

A quote dating back to a 2009 opinion piece has been repeatedly misattributed to British writer George Orwell.

It reads: “The further a society drifts from the truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.”

Reuters identified iterations of the misattributed quote that have been circulating since at least September 2012 ( here, here).

Recent Facebook posts with it have been shared over 83,700 times as of the writing of this article ( here, here, here, here).

In previous months of 2021, the quote was also shared by verified Facebook accounts and public pages, gaining tens of thousands of shares ( here, here, here, here).

Reuters did not find the quotation in the University College London Orwell Archive, visible here.

Benedict Cooper, Publicity Officer for the Orwell Society, told Reuters via email that the quote “has been falsely attributed to Orwell.”

It was in fact coined by Selwyn Duke, a freelance writer who describes himself as a “teller of Truth and leftists' worst nightmare” in his Twitter bio ( twitter.com/SelwynDuke ).

The words were part an opinion piece published on the website of grassroots organization RenewAmerica on May 6, 2009. See last paragraph here here: here).

The piece did mention Orwell, but did not attribute these words to him.

Addressing the mix up in a 2016 article for website American Thinker, Duke wrote: “The problem is, Orwell never said it. And I ought to know. Because I said it. (Or, to be precise, I wrote it.)” ( here )

Contacted by Reuters, Duke confirmed the quote was his.

Reuters has previously addressed other quotations erroneously attributed to Orwell here here.

In September 2021, Snopes addressed this quote here.
VERDICT

USA today hat eine größere Sammlung. Ich zitiere als Beweisstück zu den Akten diese Aussage, die fälschlicherweise Voltaire zugeschrieben wurde. USA today hat die wahre Geschichte:

Fact check: Quote falsely attributed to French writer and philosopher Voltaire

The claim: Voltaire said, 'If you want to know who controls you, look at who you are not allowed to criticize'

Voltaire is one of the many historical figures that is often misattributed.

A May 20 Facebook post claims the 18th-century philosopher said, "If you want to know who controls you, look at who you are not allowed to criticize.'' The post has accumulated more than 2,300 interactions.

USA TODAY reached out to the user for comment.

Fact check: No, Albert Einstein did not say famous quote about fish climbing trees

Voltaire was a critic and public activist, according to the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, but the quote came more than two centuries after his death.
Quote is from reported neo-Nazi, white nationalist figure

The original quote is worded slightly differently, according to etymologist Barry Popik, and it's from a 1993 radio broadcast by Kevin Alfred Strom. Strom is an American white nationalist and Holocaust denier, according to the Associated Press.

"To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticize?" said Strom in "All America Must Know the Terror That Is Upon Us."

USA TODAY searched Voltaire's correspondence from 1742-1777 in the University of Southern California's digital library but did not find any evidence to support the claim.

Strom, one of the founders of the National Vanguard organization, confirmed in 2017 that the quote is indeed his.

"So it’s pretty clear, even to my critics, that I came up with the idea and the quote — and Voltaire never did," said Strom in the online post.

Strom said it was "kind of flattering" that his words would be paired with "the name of the man who said such witty things."

The quote is "not un-Voltarian" said Paul Gibbard, a professor at the University of Western Australia and a researcher at the Voltaire Foundation at the University of Oxford in England, in an interview with The Guardian.

Fact check: Quote attributed to Virginia Woolf was in a movie, not her primary work

Gibbard said Voltaire's resistance to authority makes the public think it is plausible that he would have said the quote.

USA TODAY reached out to Gibbard for comment.
Our rating: False

The claim that Voltaire said, "If you want to know who controls you, look at who you are not allowed to criticize,'' is FALSE, based on our research. The quote is from Kevin Alfred Strom, a reported American white nationalist and neo-Nazi figure. In 2017, Strom confirmed the quote is his, with a slight change in the wording.

Evelyn Beatrice Hall hat sich - wie Garson O'Toole herausfand - 1945 entschuldigt, dass sie den Satz, "I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it", in Anführungszeichen setzte, so dass das Missverständnis aufkam, das sei ein Voltaire-Zitat (Link).

Einige Varianten des Pseudo-Voltaire-Zitats:

"I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."
"I do not agree with what you have to say, but I'll defend to the death your right to say it."
