New promise of a malaria vaccine
Newly published results from a large scale Phase III trial of the malaria
vaccine candidate (known as RTS,S) show hope for a future vaccine. It also
demonstrates the power of the public-private product development partnership
effort, including GAVI’s partner PATH’s Malaria Vaccine Initiative. GAVI
applauds these achievements and looks forward to further data and
results.

12 November: Fight pneumonia. Save a child.
Last year on World Pneumonia Day, Ethiopian pediatricians and
advocates called for action against pneumonia, the biggest killer of
children in Ethiopia. Less than one year later, Ethiopia is rolling out
the pneumococcal vaccine to protect millions of children against the deadly
disease.

The private sector: a critical development partner
"I can think of no finer example of private sector engagement than the GAVI Matching Fund."
The GAVI Matching Fund is a major new private sector initiative in which
the UK's DFID and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation have pledged to match
contributions from the private sector. “La Caixa” Foundation is the
newest contributor joining J.P. Morgan, Anglo America plc, and Absolute Return for Kids (ARK).

Malaria vaccine may have potential to save millions
By Elizabeth Weise, USA TODAY
After more than 30 years of work, researchers have for the first time succeeded in creating a vaccine against malaria, a deadly disease that kills nearly 800,000 a year, most of them children.
[...]
The experimental vaccine, still in the testing phase, only protects about 50% of children who receive it, but even that could "potentially translate into tens of millions of cases of malaria in children averted annually," says Tsiri Agbenyega, the principal investigator for the vaccine trials at Agogo Presbyterian Hospital in Agogo, Ghana. "This is remarkable when you consider there has never been a successful vaccine against a human parasite nor against malaria."
