Einer der Richter habe sich an den inzwischen gestorbenen Anwalt erinnert, der vor 20 Jahren das Gericht beleidigt habe. Die Richter hätten ihn deshalb mit dem Fluch belegt, seine Seele solle nach seinem Tod in einen Hund wandern. Die Tiere gelten im Judentum als unrein.
Zur Vollstreckung des Urteils durch Kinder aus dem Stadtviertel kam es demnach aber nicht mehr, weil der Hund entwischte. Dennoch wurde das Rabbiner-Gericht von Tierschützern verklagt.

Als erstes ist beim Spiegel keine Quelle angegeben. Der Text ist mit "ulz/AFP" gezeichnet, was immer das sein mag.
Eine "israelische Nachrichten-Webseite 'Ynet.com'" gibt es nicht. Allerdings gibt es ein ynetnews.com, bei dem tatsächlich ein Artikel zum Thema vorhanden ist. Auch diesen Artikel zitiere ich zur Beweisführung vollständig:

A Jerusalem rabbinical court recently sentenced a wandering dog to death by stoning. The cruel sentence stemmed from the suspicion that the spirit of a famous secular lawyer, who insulted the court's judges 20 years ago, had been transferred into the dog's body.

Several weeks ago, according to the Behadrei Hadarim website, a large dog entered the Monetary Affairs Court near the ultra-Orthodox neighborhood of Mea Shearim. The dog scared the court's visitors and, to their surprise, refused to leave even after they attempted to drive him away.
One of the judges suddenly recalled that about 20 years ago, a famous secular lawyer who insulted the court was cursed by the panel of judges, who wished that his spirit would move on to the body of a dog (considered an impure animal by Halacha). The lawyer passed away several years ago.
Still offended, one of the judges sentenced the poor animal to death by stoning, recruiting the neighborhood's children to carry out the order. Luckily, the dog managed to escape.
The head of the court, Rabbi Avraham Dov Levin, denied that the judges had called for the dog's stoning. But one of the court's managers confirmed the report to Yedioth Ahronoth.
"It was ordered by the rabbis because of the grief he had caused the court," he said. "They didn't issue an official ruling, but ordered the children outside to throw stones at him in order to drive him away. They didn't think of it as cruelty to animals, but as an appropriate way to 'get back at' the spirit which entered the poor dog."
Jerusalem City Council Member and social activist Rachel Azaria sent an urgent letter to the attorney general, calling on him to "deal with the criminals". The Let the Animals Live organization filed a complaint with the police against Rabbi Levin.

Die Suche danach für auf etwas undefinierbares: http://www.bhol.co.il Nur unlesbare Hieroglyphen, nicht einmal Englisch ist vorhanden. Hier scheint aber die ursprüngliche Quelle zu sein. Daß die Journalisten des Spiegel die gelesen haben, halte ich für ausgeschlossen.
Ein anderer Treffer für "Behadrei Hadarim" führt zu einem Blog-Artikel. Auch den zitiere ich wegen der Beweisführung vollständig:

Haredim Stone Dog In Reincarnation Payback?
Dog Rabbis of an ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim, Jerusalem religious court, bothered by a stray dog hanging out, realized the dog must be the reincarnation of a secular attorney who had defied the court 20 years earlier. Knowing just what to do, the rabbis ordered neighborhood children to stone the dog to death as a tikkun, repair, for the lawyer's soul – or did they?
I saw this story a couple days ago in Hebrew on B'hadrei Haredim. It was completely believable. But it also could easily be fake.
B'hadrei Haredim cited a Yediot Achranot article as its source, so I decided to wait for Ynet – it's English language site – to publish the story. Nothing happened.
Then today I noticed that Rafi G and DovBear had both posted on it.
But it was a comment by Rafi G on his own post that clarified the matter for me:
this story has made the rounds, as it clearly would. In Walla's report they say they spoke to the head of the beis din, Rav Levin, and he denies it. he says it never happened. there was a dog near the entrance to the beis din, and one of the people in the waiting room mentioned that they had tried to chase it away, That is as far as the story goes, according to the walla report. They never told kids to stone the dog.

In other words, if we take the head of the religious court at his own words, what happened is that neighborhood ultra-Orthodox children stoned the dog on their own, presumably for fun.
So we have a choice: believe haredi children are cruel, and could stone the dog without interference of haredi adults – who are also presumably cruel – or believe that the head of the rabbinic court is lying, that he ordered the dog stoned, and that he and his colleagues believe in a primitive theology and are cruel, as well.
And the answer is?
I don't know.
Both possibilities could easily be true, and both illustrate deep problems with ultra-Orthodoxy.

This is as crazy a story as any I have heard recently.
A beis din of financial issues in Mea Shearim was recently visited by a visitor that would just not leave. A dog showed up at the entrance to the beis din, and they were unsuccessful in their many attempts to chase it away.
When discussing what to do about the disturbance, they had decided to assume it was a gilgul coming "back" for a kapara of some sort, and they would say "machul lecha, machul lecha, machul lecha", you are forgiven, so that the soul could move on and ascend to heaven after receiving forgiveness for whatever its body had done wrong during it's life.
Before they did so, the dayanim of the beis din recalled that more than 20 years prior a famous lawyer (who remains unnamed) had taken the beis din to civil court regarding a psak they had issued. Beis Din had begged him to cancel the suit, but he refused. After they had to appear in court, they decreed upon the lawyer that after death he would return to the world in the form of a dog, and that would bring about his forgiveness.
They went to check it out and found that the lawyer died a few years ago. They then discussed how to proceeded and paskened that the dog needed to be stoned. The children of the area were called in to stone the dog, and they came and threw stones at it. After a while the dog left the area. (source: bechadrei)
Perhaps whenever the residents of Mea Shearim decide to throw stones they are really helping a troubled soul receive his forgiveness. Is it possible?

They are only trying to further frighten people from entering civil court suits when they don't agree with the beis din's pasken. They want to keep their power. The message is clear: follow our decisions, or you'll die and come back as a dog, and then we'll stone you.
The way they told the children to stone the dog is sick. They are trying to raise sociopaths?

Not really sure what to make of this story, which I have only seen in foreign newspapers, but as per a report in the Italian daily Corriere della Sera, a rabbinic court in Jerusalem has stoned a stray dog to death on the grounds that the dog is the reincarnated soul of a lawyer who had previously offended the court.
Here's the story (translation provided by Google)
"The decision to stone the dog was taken by the rabbis because of the potential prejudice to the court. It was not given a proper official ruling, but the children were told to throw stones at the animal. To drive or to bring it down. The intention was not to cause suffering to the dog, rather, they considered the most appropriate way to 'get even' with that soul who has reincarnated in the poor creature"
Two things to remark upon here:
(1) I guess this means Judaism has made up its mind, and decided that souls are reincarnated. It wasn't always so poshut. [/b]The wide acceptance of reincarnation is something relatively new under the Jewish sun. In the middle ages, most authorities opposed the tenet of reincarnation, which is not mentioned in the Torah, Mishna, or Talmud (I think). Now, the pendulum has swung, and most authorities think reincarnation is real.[/b] Personally, I don't think accepting reincarnation is good for the Jews (see 2 below) but I find myself wondering what the souls did while the Rabbis were making up their minds. Was reincarnation postponed until after the theology of Lurianic Kabbalah replaced scholastic rationalism, or did the souls continue to reincarnate even while most rabbis believed it was impossible? Will the souls stop reincarnating if, it should happen quickly in our days, some new theology replaces what we have now?
(2) The reason this is bad for the Jews, is because ours is supposed to be religion of personal responsibility and a religion of laws. Our lives are the sum of our own choices. Our successes and failures are our own. Puting the blame on an invisible soul, based on zero evidence, is a great way to avoid personal culpability, but there is little else to recommend it. Moreover its abhorrent to me that a dog was stoned to death because someone decided, based on no evidence at all, that the dog was the reincarnation of an old enemy. Is this how intelligent people make life and death decisions? And if a court has the power to make this sort of ruling about a dog, why not a person? I fear this case brings us a step or two closer to the day when Rabbis will be able to say "Joe Blow over there is the reincarnation of Hitler. That's why he offends me. People, get your stones ready."
Let's hope this is a hoax.

את המחזה שראו עוברי אורח בשכונת מאה שערים, בשעות אחר הצהריים, הם לא ישכחו לעולם. קבוצת ילדים, תושבי השכונה, יידו אבנים על כלב שעמד נזוף בפינת הרחוב. על 'החבורה העליזה' פיקחה חבורת דיינים מכובדים, שבאו לוודא כי הכלב מקבל את עונשו.
איך מתחוללת לה סיטואציה שכזו? על כך בשורות שלפניכם.
בית הדין של הגרא"ד לוין לענייני ממונות מושך אליו מידי יום עשרות אנשים, המגיעים להתדיין בדין תורה. בית הדין, הממוקם ברחוב חיי אדם בשכונת מאה שערים, ידוע בפסקיו המהירים ובדייניו העושים הכל בכדי שלא לגרום לעינוי הדין.
היום (ד'), בשעה 16:00, התלווה כלב גדול לכל אדם שבא בשערי בית הדין. האנשים שהתגודדו בחדר הכניסה ניסו להבריח את הכלב, אך כל מאמציהם עלו בתוהו.
אחד מהנוכחים סיפר הערב ל'בחדרי חרדים': "ניסינו להוציא את הכלב בכל הדרכים ולא הצלחנו. הוא נדחק דרך החריץ של הדלת ולא נתן לנו לסגור אותה. כשהצליח להיכנס, התיישב הכלב בפינת בית הדין, וסירב לעזוב את המקום".

"לאחר שהדיינים נאלצו להתבזות בבית המשפט, גזרו על אותו עורך-דין שיחזור בגלגול בצורת כלב ובזה יימחל לו. הדיינים ערכו בירור וגילו שהעורך-דין נפטר לפני מספר שנים.
"הדיינים התיישבו וחשבו כיצד לנהוג בכלב. לאחר דיון קצר, פסקו שדינו של הכלב בסקילה.

מדינה חשוכה הביאה לכך שלא נעצרו מי שסקלו. השאלה אינה מאיפה מופיע גזר הדין אלא עצם ההתעללות העוברת בשקט באין אוכף זכויות בעלי חיים. הם זקוקים להגנה מפני רוצחים. מי שרוצח בעל חיים הוא רוצח.

ארגון "תנו לחיות לחיות" צפוי להגיש היום (חמישי) תלונה במשטרה נגד הרב אברהם דב לוין, רב חרדי נודע ואב בית דין ידוע במגזר החרדי. לטענת הארגון, הורה הרב לסקול כלב שמצא את דרכו לפתח בית דינו בירושלים.
אתמול התייצב הכלב בפתח בית דינו של הרב, ולפי עדי ראייה סירב לעזוב את המקום והפחיד את הממתינים להתדיין. לפי פרסום באתר החרדי "בחדרי חרדים", דייני בית הדין זיהו לבסוף את הכלב כמי שהתגלגלה בו נשמתו של עורך דין שביזה אותם בעבר, כיוון שגרר אותם לדיון בבית משפט אזרחי. בעקבות כך, פסקו הדיינים לסקול את הכלב. לפי האתר החרדי, למשימה גויסו כל ילדי השכונה החרדית "מאה שערים" בירושלים, והכלב נבהל ונמלט מהמקום.
פרסומת
אתי אלטמן, דוברת "תנו לחיות לחיות", מתכוונת להגיש את התלונה במשטרה בעצמה. "בוקר טוב אירן, או שאולי בכלל הגענו לימי הביניים", אמרה אלטמן. "האנשים האלה פעלו בניגוד לכל מה שמסמלת הדת היהודית וגם בניגוד לחוק הישראלי, כך שיש למצות איתם את הדין. מדובר במובילי ציבור בעלי השפעה ואם הרב מרשה להתעלל בכלב, מה יגידו אזובי הקיר? מבלי להיכנס בכלל לדעתי האישית על נשמות שמתגלגלות לבעלי חיים, אין שום הצדקה לסקילת בעל חיים חסר אונים באבנים במצוות הרבנים".
בשיחה עם וואלה! חדשות דחה הרב אברהם דב לוין את הדברים ואמר שהפרסום באתר החרדי לא היה ולא נברא. הרב אישר את דבר הימצאותו של הכלב בפתח בית הדין וסיפר, כי שמע שאחד מהיושבים בחדר ההמתנה ניסה לגרשו שלוש פעמים ללא הצלחה. עם זאת הוסיף כי מעולם לא הורה לסקול את הכלב: "חס ושלום, לא יצאנו מבית הדין בכלל", אמר.

In my opinion, PETA is sexist, dishonest, ignorant and prejudiced against many people including fat people, and I don't like their tactics. They also don't seem to let nutritional requirements or honest nutritional information get in the way of their desire to convert the world to veganism. I'm not a dietician or nutritional therapist, I'm just speaking from my own experience with and observation of the organization.
However...
They've got a point. I think it's a good idea. I'm apalled at witnessing what the Charedim and egomaniacal Rabbis are doing - not just in Israel anymore, but in the US as well now. It has to stop. It's insane, it's embarassing, it's tragic and disheartening.

I'm on the side that says PETA has lost it.
If they had stoned and killed the dog, ok. But he only "called" for the stoning and I have heard of no injury to the dog.
People have thrown rocks at dogs to run them off forever, since when is that a crime? You don't even have to hit the dog, just land it close to him and it'll scare them away.
Maybe you have to wait for the dog to attack? Self-Defense?
If he had killed or injured the dog, that would be a whole new ballgame.

Stray dogs are a problem all around the world. Go to India and see how the canines are treated there. Too many people let dogs breed like rabbits excuse the mixed metaphor. Dogs are also domesticated animals that have thrived due to human progress. Because of my traditional stance I think it is healthy and wise to round up stray animals like cats and dogs and dispose of them humanely. The point with this story is that the Rabbis may have just said to the kids to toss some stones in the dog's direction to get him to move on. This is a very different scenario than one out of "The Stoning of Soraya M." The point about the reincarnation idea is bizarre and may show if true that toxic groupthink can develop in certain leadership cliques over time. It is one of the reasons I have always attempted to relate to as many types of different people as possible. I also like trying to work out people's frame of reference and how to "connect" to them. PETA are specialists at capitalizing on a certain mindset. If they are willing to change their philosophy I will reconsider them. The fauna of the world have a special place and cruelty can never be justified. Happy to say Australia is a very advanced place in it's treatment of animals. Just recently there was a major brouhaha regarding the slaughter of live cattle exports in Indonesia. Anyway getting off track slightly. I really think the city of Jerusalem needs the presence of a wise counsellor right now.

In Israel, due to fear of rabies, stray dogs and cats are usually rounded up very quickly. Animal control should have been called. Hashem gave the dog a special position in our world via vie us, his ultimate creaton and that is to be our companion, protector of our home and family and the ability to service in hospitals to visit the sick who it has been proven perk up when these loving creatures come by.
Usually strays dogs will approach humans because they have a homing beacon to us thanks to the creator. They would prefer to be in our company then without it even if they could find food on a regular basis in trashbins. Dogs have been known to travel great distances to find their owner and will lie on the owners grave in mourning.
What bunch of pond scum these people are.

Peta is not made up of left-wing Jew haters. It is entirely apolitical and in fact, many members are JEWS. The animal rights movement itself is made up of a disproportionatley large number of yidden. When a message needs to be sent or action needs to be motivated, Peta often is the catalyst. They get the job done. You may not like Peta per se but again, they get the job done. There can be no justification for stoning a dog, or ripping the throats out of cows no matter what kind of foul mood one is in that day or how hungry one is. These matters need to be addressed and Peta is usually the only entity that steadfastly addresses them and does not fall by the wayside and give up in the process.

Perhaps if the holy roller corrupt politicos disguised as corrupt "rabbis" had honored their pledge of abandoning their old trusty shackle and hoist, this would not have happened. That is, another avenue of dialogue could have been opened. But no, as usual the holy rollers are a law unto the themselves and are above and beyond any such committments even when it involves honoring their own promises and words.

As far as this dog is concerned, nothing happened. As usual, PETA is barking up the wrong tree, and is making a fool out of itself in the process (along with the rabbis).

Shame on the Israeli press for publishing the story in the first place, which could be chalked down to internal Israeli issues between secular and ultra-Orthodox sectors of the population.
Indeed, the Israeli press like any free media in the developed world is more than capable of tabloid-style journalism, displaying political bias and making mistakes. The Israeli press, however, has a responsibility beyond that to its own domestic audience.
So many of the stories that you see in the international media are not exclusives broken by the New York Times, CNN or The Guardian. They come straight from the pages of the Hebrew press. And foreign journalists don’t even need to read Hebrew thanks to the proliferation of Israeli news sites in English, such as Ha’aretz, YNet News and the Jerusalem Post.

Perhaps the Daily Telegraph, Time, AFP and the BBC can be forgiven for running a story that was newsworthy simply due to its highly unusual nature. Making #1 on the BBC’s Most Shared list is testament to the interest that it generated.
But it doesn’t change the fact that even during relatively “quiet” periods in Israel and particularly when the main news stories are coming from neighboring countries such as Syria, some media are still compelled to publish stories that are not only negative but actually demeaning to Israel or the Jewish religion.
In any case, international media outlets should do the professional thing and follow the Israeli press in publishing corrections.

No stray dog was condemned to death, or stoned by a rabbinical court in Jerusalem, the Beth Din have insisted.

A statement from the court said:
“There is no basis for stoning dogs or any other animal in the Jewish religion, not since the days of the Temple or Abraham.
“The female dog found a seat in the corner of the court. And the children were delighted by it; there were hundreds outside the court. They are used to seeing stray cats but most have never seen a dog before. The only action we took was to dial the number of the Jerusalem Municipality to get the people in charge to take it away.
“There was no talk of reincarnation, a lawyer has never been mentioned, either now or 20 years ago, and there was no stoning. Such inventions are a kind of blood libel, and we wonder why the inventor of the story did not continue to describe how we collected the blood of the dog to make our matzah.”
The story, when circulated on Yahoo, attracted more than 1,800 comments, most expressing violent anger. One wrote “the more I see of Israelis, the more I like my dog.”
