Journalistensprache

New Report on Benefits of Health Insurance Reform for Women with Breast Cancerzeodyrax

HHS RELEASE--Sebelius Releases New Report

Sebelius Releases New Report on Benefits of Health Insurance
Reform for Women with Breast Cancer
As Americans mark breast cancer awareness month, Secretary of Health and
Human Services Kathleen Sebelius today released a new report, Health
Insurance Reform and Breast Cancer: Making the Health Care System Work
for Women. The report details how health insurance reform will help
women diagnosed with breast cancer and is available now at
www.HealthReform.gov.
"Thousands of women and their families are impacted by breast cancer,"
Secretary Sebelius said. "We are fighting for health reform that will
help improve treatment for women with breast cancer and doing all we can
to encourage women to take the simple steps that can help prevent this
disease."
The new report highlights the problems in the health care status quo
that significantly impact women who are diagnosed with breast cancer or
are breast cancer survivors. The report notes:
* Breast cancer is the second leading type of cancer among women.
The disease will affect one in eight American women during their
lifetime, with treatment costs totaling $7 Billion in 2007.
* Breast cancer patients with employer-based insurance had total
out-of-pocket costs averaging $6,250 in 2007, higher than out-of-pocket
spending for patients with asthma, diabetes, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), or high blood pressure.
* Breast cancer patients, even when in remission, are unlikely to
find meaningful insurance coverage in the individual insurance market. A
full 11 percent of individuals with any cancer said they could not
obtain health coverage in the individual insurance market.
"Today, breast cancer patients incur thousands of dollars in debt, and
breast cancer survivors struggle to get the affordable care they need,"
Sebelius added. "Health insurance reform will bring costs down, make
care more affordable and prevent insurance companies from discriminating
against breast cancer survivors."

Headline: HHS Secretary Sebelius and Education Secretary Duncan
Announce Winner of 2009 H1N1 PSA Contest
Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Sebelius and
Department of Education (ED) Secretary Arne Duncan today announced that
Dr. John Clarke of Baldwin, N.Y., is the winner of the 2009 H1N1 PSA
Contest. More than 50,000 votes were cast by Americans across the
country on YouTube. Dr. Clarke will receive a $2,500 cash prize and his
ad will be broadcast on national television. The announcement was made
at a What To About the Flu town hall meeting held by Obama
Administration officials with college students and faculty at George
Mason University today.
"We are thrilled that so many Americans got involved in our PSA contest
this summer," said HHS Secretary Sebelius. "I want to congratulate Dr.
Clarke, the 'hip hop doc,' for producing his creative and engaging
video. His work will reach millions of Americans this flu season to
remind them how to stay healthy."
"The PSA contest has been an excellent way for us to get the public's
help in spreading the word about H1N1 prevention. We had several
outstanding videos and I applaud everyone who submitted an entry. Our
winner, Dr. Clarke, combined good music with good science in a way that
we hope will help keep people safe and healthy this flu season," said
Education Secretary Duncan.
In July, the Department of Health and Human Services teamed up with the
Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education to
launch a national public service advertising campaign designed to
encourage American children and families to practice healthy habits and
to take steps to prevent the spread of the 2009 H1N1 flu virus.
Over 240 videos were submitted by the August deadline, after which a
panel of experts narrowed the field to 10 finalists. Over the last two
weeks, Americans weighed in to vote for their favorite PSA on YouTube.
In the winning video, Dr. Clarke performed an original rap on how to
prevent the spread of the flu. Dr. Clarke is the Medical Director for
the Long Island Railroad, and his PSA was videotaped at the Mineola,
N.Y., railroad station.
The 2009 H1N1 PSA Contest finalists include:
Jason Phillips (San Francisco, Calif.)
Gary Ashwal (Los Angeles, Calif.)
Christopher Landy (Ardmore, Pa.)
Andrew Starver (La Marida, Calif.)
Dr. John Clarke (Baldwin, N.Y.)
Joan Porter (Oak Park, Mich.)
Luke Eddy (West Point, Utah)
Christopher Cymbalak (Leland, N.C.)
The 2009 H1N1 Contest PSAs are part of an initiative to provide
practical steps recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) to help prevent the spread of the flu virus and other
infectious disease, including:
* Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
* Keep your distance from others if you are sick.
* When possible, stay home from work, school, and errands when you
are sick, and don't send your children to childcare or school if they
are sick.
* Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
* Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after
coughing and sneezing.
* Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

vom 16. September 2009

Vorsicht Fuchsbandwurm

Statement by Dr. Anthony Fauci
Director, National Institute of Allergy and Infections Diseases, NIH
Regarding Early Results from Clinical Trials of 2009 H1N1 Influenza Vaccines in Healthy Adults
We are encouraged by reports that are now emerging from various clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, conducted by various vaccine manufacturers. We expect additional companies to announce their preliminary trial results shortly. The early data from these trials indicate that 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines are well tolerated and induce a strong immune response in most healthy adults when administered in a single unadjuvanted 15-microgram dose. We congratulate the companies on these trials, which are an important part of the ongoing worldwide effort to develop vaccines to protect the public from 2009 H1N1 influenza.
The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part of the National Institutes of Health, also is conducting clinical trials of 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccines, produced by Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited. The NIAID trials are testing two different dosages (15 micrograms versus 30 micrograms) and evaluating the immune response to one and two doses of these vaccines. More than 2,800 people are participating in ongoing NIAID trials of these vaccines.
We are pleased to note that preliminary analyses of early data from the NIAID trials align with the recently announced findings and those to be announced imminently by other companies in that both vaccines studied induced what is likely to be a protective immune response in most adults following a single dose in the same amount (15 micrograms) used in seasonal flu vaccines. Specifically, in blood samples obtained 8 to 10 days after vaccination:
* Among healthy adults who received a single 15-microgram dose of the Sanofi Pasteur vaccine, a robust immune response was measured in 96 percent of adults aged 18 to 64 and in 56 percent of adults aged 65 and older.
* Similarly, among healthy adults who received a single 15-microgram dose of the CSL Limited vaccine, a robust immune response was measured in 80 percent of adults aged 18 to 64 and in 60 percent of adults aged 65 and older.
Additional data from the NIAID trials are forthcoming. However, on the basis of these strong early data, our results are consonant with other reports that a single 15-microgram dose of unadjuvanted 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is well tolerated and induces a robust immune response in healthy adults between the ages of 18 and 64. For adults aged 65 and over, the immune response to 2009 H1N1 influenza vaccine is somewhat less robust, as is the case with seasonal influenza vaccines.
We note that the slight discrepancies seen in our trials between the Sanofi Pasteur and CSL Limited vaccines may be due to technical differences in the preliminary measurement of the amounts of antigen in the doses used in the clinical trial lots and the relatively limited numbers of samples studied to date, as well as the fact that our data are drawn from a very early time point after immunization.
NIAID will continue to provide timely updates on these trials as well as those in children and in pregnant women, which began later.
Information from the NIAID studies will help inform the development of recommendations for immunization schedules, including the optimal dosage and number of doses for different age groups.
NIAID is conducting these clinical trials through its longstanding
vaccine clinical trials infrastructure: the Vaccine and Treatment
Evaluation Units, a network of medical centers that offers rapid
response capability to test vaccines for emerging public health
concerns. Detailed information is available from the NIAID Web site
